Clarifying the error of those who say: Naming the prayer of tarawih by 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) as an innovation is because he gathered them for twenty-three rak'ahs.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : There remains another point that some may mention; they say: You are correct in saying that the prayer of tarawih is a recommended practice (sunnah) based on the actions and words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but 'Umar only called it an innovation because he gathered them behind a single imam for twenty rak'ahs, adding three to make twenty-three rak'ahs with the witr. We say: This statement is invalid and has no basis. If you wish to verify this, refer to the books of the Sunnah; for it is established in the book of Imam Malik, "al-Muwatta," which Imam al-Shafi'i in his time considered the most authentic book compiled on the Sunnah, that it was narrated with a very authentic chain that when 'Umar ibn al-Khattab gathered the people behind Ubayy, he ordered Ubayy to pray eleven rak'ahs with them. I am not, of course, currently in the position of delving into this specific detail of the prayer of tarawih; whether increasing the number is prescribed or not? That has another context or occasion. But I want to remind you that 'Umar said this word and ordered Ubayy to pray with the people the actual recommended practice (sunnah) that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) performed throughout his life, including eleven rak'ahs in the three nights.
And with this, the discussion of this report ends, and how they distorted it, and tried to use it as evidence for what contradicts that Islamic principle of jurisprudence, which was not established by the scholars of jurisprudence, who one might say: This is an error, but rather it was established by the Master of people (peace and blessings be upon him), and it is established from him in many hadiths as we mentioned.
