Is the compilation of the Noble Qur'an in a single mushaf a religious innovation?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And based on this, say whatever is said as examples in the path of refuting the good religious innovation, such as their saying—for example—that the compilation of the Qur'an is an innovation. This is one of the wonders of the times; they say: the compilation of the Qur'an is an innovation, but innovation has categories; some of it is obligatory, some of it is a duty, some of it is a recommended practice, and so on. The compilation of the Qur'an is an innovation; this is one of the most astonishing things a student of knowledge hears from some of the people of knowledge, that they should call the Qur'an—which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) began the longest surah in the Qur'an with His saying:
This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah - الم * ذَلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ هُدًى لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:2]
—this book is not called a book of scattered lines and separated pages except after it is compiled in a book that people circulate, as the Companions did in the past, and on the primitive means they knew until today, no matter how much progress has been made in these means. So the claim that the compilation of the Qur'an is an innovation is like saying that 'Umar's expulsion of the Jews was an innovation. This and that are false statements. Rather, this is among the obligations. If there were not such an indication in the Qur'an, and other things like the command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to write down the Qur'an and erase the hadiths they had written so that the Qur'an would remain preserved on its own, there would have been no room to say that it is an innovation in the religion. And if they described it as an obligation, how so, when this falls under the rule of the jurists: "What is not possible to fulfill an obligation except by it is itself obligatory."
And among the great wonders, given the importance of compiling the Qur'an, and here is a great lesson; when Abu Bakr al-Siddiq tasked 'Umar ibn al-Khattab and Zayd ibn Thabit with compiling the Qur'an, do you know what Zayd ibn Thabit's position was? It was a strange position that indicates to us that the righteous Salaf's position regarding what might be thought to be an innovation in the religion was the position of one who fears falling into innovation. Whereas today, you find the position completely reversed. The first thing they deny to a person, they say to you: "My brother, what is the problem? This is a good innovation." Look at the position of Zayd ibn Thabit when they tasked him with compiling the Qur'an; he said to them: "How can you do something that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do?!"
Allah is the Greatest! The compilation of the Qur'an, which preserves the religion, and which the Lord of the Worlds promised to preserve in His saying:
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
[Al-Hijr 15:9]
; when the Rightly Guided Caliphs, Abu Bakr and 'Umar, realized and executed this divine promise:
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
[Al-Hijr 15:9]
, Zayd ibn Thabit, who is who he is in knowledge, and who used to write the revelation for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), feared that this act would be an innovation in the religion. So he said: "How can you do something that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do?!" He said: "So they kept pressing me until Allah expanded my chest for it, just as He expanded the chests of Abu Bakr and 'Umar for it."
And
Indeed in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present [in mind]. إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَذِكْرَى لِمَنْ كَانَ لَهُ قَلْبٌ أَوْ أَلْقَى السَّمْعَ وَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ
[Qaf 50:37]

The questioner : My brothers, regarding the questions that were raised before for the Shaykh, we apologize if we tell the brothers that we do not present them to the Shaykh; especially since there are tapes at the Sari Company. So the brothers who have not heard these questions and the Shaykh's answers to them should refer to these tapes so that the knowledge is not repeated again, but we will bring new questions.

Another questioner : May Allah reward you with good...
