Is there a good innovation in the religion, or is every innovation misguidance? And what was the position of the righteous Salaf regarding innovations?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Here we say, regarding his statement (peace and blessings be upon him):
Every innovation is misguidance.
It was reported from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both) a statement that serves as an explanation for this generality:
Every innovation is misguidance.
Ibn 'Umar said, explaining and clarifying and making it explicit: "Even if people consider it good." Every innovation is misguidance, even if people consider it good. This draws our attention to an issue we have heard for a long time: those who hold it have deviated from the Sunnah of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). Perhaps I will address this later and soon, if Allah wills, for I want to remind you of the completion of some of these texts that confirm for you this very, very great principle.
every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fireكل بدعة ضلالة وكل ضلالة في النار
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam)
Especially after Ibn 'Umar's interpretation of it with his statement: "Even if people consider it good." I think many of you have read or heard the hadith of al-'Urbayy ibn Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) gave us a sermon that made our hearts tremble and our eyes shed tears. We said: "O Messenger of Allah, give us advice." He said: "I advise you to fear Allah, and to listen and obey, even if a slave from the Habashah is appointed over you. And whoever among you lives will see much disagreement. So hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs after me. Bite into them with your molars. And beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance."
Here, there is no addition of
and every going astray is in the Fire
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam)
"and every misguidance is in the Fire"; rather, that is in the first hadith, the hadith of the sermon of necessity. The point of this hadith is that it provides us with a new benefit not mentioned in the previous hadiths. Thus, every researcher and jurist who wants to gain understanding in the Sunnah must be well-versed and gather all the hadiths reported on the same topic so that he emerges from this gathering with a complete issue lacking nothing. Here the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) informs us with his statement:
And whoever among you lives will see much disagreement.
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:1232
It is as if a questioner asked, though in reality he did not ask, for Allah (Mighty and Majestic) inspires His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to answer before being asked. It is as if a questioner asked: "O Messenger of Allah, if we see this disagreement that you are informing us about with your statement:
And whoever among you lives will see much disagreement.
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:1232
What do we do, O Messenger of Allah? If we see this much disagreement, what do we do?" So he (peace and blessings be upon him) answered them without being asked, as we mentioned:
You must therefore follow my sunna and that of the rightly guided Caliphs
Mishkat al-Masabih 165Sahīh (Zubair `Aliza'i)
to the end of the hadith. So the one who is sincere from any sect and from any disagreement that occurs among Muslims is the one who resorts to the path of the first believers, where he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in clear Arabic: "If you see disagreement, then hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs after me." Do the Muslims today, when they fall into a disputed issue, return to following his command (peace and blessings be upon him) and other things that came in the Qur'an and the Sunnah? If you see disagreement, then hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs after me? The answer, unfortunately, is that few of the Muslims do so. They are the ones who strive with the utmost striving for two things that are inseparable and undivided: first, knowing the Sunnah that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was upon, and second, striving with all striving to apply it in themselves, then in those who take refuge with them, then in those who live around them, and so on. Now, we are dealing with one issue: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) criticized in a general manner every innovation in the religion. Did the Muslims stop at this general criticism of every innovation in worship in Islam, or did they differ? The reality is that they differed, because I believe that among you who are students of knowledge, and even among those who listen to knowledge in obedience to the report from Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) when he said: "Be a scholar, or a student, or a listener, and do not be the fourth, lest you perish," you must either be among the students of knowledge, or at least among those who sit in the gatherings of knowledge. You have heard on some occasion a saying made in such an occasion: "What the Muslims consider good is good." And added to that, some of them say: No, my brother, there is a good innovation in Islam. How can you say:
Every innovation is misguidance.
This point must be understood by the Muslim who truly wants to obey the verse we are in the process of explaining:
So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work
[Al-Kahf 18:110]
For the innovation that has crept into Islam is not of Islam in any way, and naturally, it is not of righteous deeds in any way. If the Muslim approaches Allah (Mighty and Majestic) with what Allah has not legislated on the tongue of His Messenger, then that is an unrighteous deed, and consequently, it is a deed by which salvation on the Day of Resurrection is not hoped for.
