The Shaykh : And now, our hadith is the fifth one, and it clarifies how the crescent of Ramadan is established. Does the matter require many witnesses, or is one just witness sufficient? Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that he said:
The people were looking for the crescent moon, so I informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that I had seen it, so he fasted and ordered the people to fast. تراءى الناس الهلال فأخبرت النبي صلى الله عليه و آله و سلم أني رأيته فصام و أمر الناس بصيامه
It was narrated by Abu Dawud, and al-Hakim and Ibn Hibban graded it as authentic. This hadith is, in reality, one of the authentic hadiths, and it was graded as authentic by al-Hakim and Ibn Hibban, whom the author mentioned…”
