How many witnesses are sufficient for the sighting of the Shawwal crescent?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: How many witnesses are sufficient for the sighting of the Shawwal crescent? And if one person sees it and keeps it to himself, is he obligated to break his fast or to continue fasting? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer: Two just witnesses are required in all months, except for the entry of Ramadan, where one just person is sufficient to establish its entry, according to the most correct of the scholars' opinions. This is based on what is established from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father), who said: "The people looked for the crescent, and I informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that I had seen it, so he fasted and ordered the people to fast." There is a good corroborating narration from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father).
If one person sees the crescent and his testimony is not accepted, he does not fast alone and he does not break his fast alone, according to the most correct of the scholars' opinions. Rather, he must fast with the people and break his fast with the people. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The fast is the day the people fast, the breaking of the fast is the day the people break their fast, and the sacrifice is the day the people sacrifice.الصوم يوم تصومون، والفطر يوم تفطرون، والأضحى يوم تضحون

. And success is from Allah.
