The Shaykh : I came across an article by Shaykh al-Islam Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) in which he explains the virtue of the people of hadith and that the people of hadith are the saved sect, and that they are the ones to whom a Muslim should turn for his religion and follow their school of thought. Anyone who has some correct Islamic culture knows who Shaykh al-Islam Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) is. In the briefest possible terms, one who has no culture or knowledge of the virtue of this learned man can know the reality of his knowledge and virtue if he knows that it has been possible for some students of knowledge in this time to collect from his fatwas and treatises, which he composed in response to questions from questioners from various Islamic lands in his time, a collection of those fatwas and treatises amounting to thirty-five volumes of this size. As they say, few are the great ones, so Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him), and may Allah reward him with good for Islam and the Sunnah, is in reality one of the rare scholars who raised the banner of the Sunnah high and put an end to the various foreign innovations in Islam, whether they were philosophical, creedal, jurisprudential, Sufi, or any other innovation from which Islam disavows itself. Shaykh al-Islam was the only imam who stood up to oppose all the people of innovation in their various types, paths, and schools. Therefore, I saw it obligatory upon me to let you hear something of the man’s words, especially since this speech is about what we have been calling for for more than a third of a century, namely following the Book and the Sunnah and not following any school of thought other than this school, the school of the people of hadith. Therefore, I see that I should let you hear a section of his speech so that you may understand the importance of the school of the Sunnah, which is the school that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bequeathed to his Companions, and they in turn bequeathed it to those after them, and then every one who came after them has followed their guidance, not being satisfied with anything other than the Sunnah as their school of thought.
