The questioner : When I am in the midday or afternoon prayer, for example, and I am behind the imam, I recite a surah that contains a prostration, such as Surah al-Inshiqaq or al-'Alaq, because I always recite in the order of the mushaf and I do not prostrate. What is the ruling?

The Shaykh : If the ma'mum recites a verse that contains a prostration, he does not prostrate, because his prayer is linked to the imam. If he were to prostrate, he would differ from the imam and cause a discrepancy. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Imam is (appointed) to be followed. So do not differ from him إنما جعل الإمام ليؤتم به، فلا تختلفوا عليه
Sahih al-Bukhari 722
This is one of the matters that the imam bears on behalf of the ma'mum; that is, if the ma'mum recites a verse of prostration, he does not prostrate, for the reasons we have mentioned.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
