Women’s Excessive Exposure of Their Awrah Before Their Mahrams

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And now, how do Muslims live in their homes? They live in a state of nakedness that is almost like the nakedness of women who do not know the religion of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). I do not know the extent of this nakedness in homes, because I am new to this country. But in Syria and Egypt, tell no harm regarding people’s excessive exposure in their homes. Women expose much of their bodies beyond what Allah has permitted them to reveal, which is only the places of adornment. For example, we have been afflicted with short clothing that has no sleeves, the inner garment that is called "tubban" in old Arabic and is known today as "shorts." These are short pants that reveal the thighs beneath them. So today, the mother and the daughter wear this short clothing. The daughter sits in front of her mother, and even in front of her young brother who is full of manhood and desire. She lifts her leg and places it on her thigh, so her thigh appears exposed and naked. On what grounds? On the grounds that there is no stranger present; this is her brother. This contradicts the previous verse, because Allah—as we mentioned—only permitted the exposure of the places of adornment. The thighs were never places of adornment, and perhaps they never will be.
Likewise, a woman goes out in front of her brother, let alone in front of her father, with her upper arms bare. This contradicts the previous text:
not expose their adornment except to their husbands وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ
[An-Nur 24:31]
. Here, the upper arm is not adornment, and the armpit is not adornment. So all of this remains forbidden within the limits of the permission in his (peace be upon him) saying:
A woman is an awrah المرأة عورة
.
And more than that happens. A mother enters the home bathroom and orders her daughter to massage her back. She exposes her back and her breasts and the upper part of the body, as we said, with absolutely no hesitation! Where did this come from? Even though the verse is explicit that our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) only permitted a woman to expose only the places of adornment. The chest is not a place of adornment, and the back is not a place of adornment.
Therefore, our righteous predecessors (may Allah be pleased with them) lived in their homes within the limits of the covering that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) granted them as a dispensation. There was not this nakedness that has become widespread today in Islamic countries. So I want to remind you of this explicit concept in the Qur'an, and to conduct ourselves with the etiquette of the Qur'an, and to teach our women and daughters this etiquette, and not to be influenced by the surrounding atmosphere; because these atmospheres merely reflect European traditions that are mostly disbelieving.
