The Shaykh : This boldness in the action that Khalid ibn al-Walid undertook was not based on prior experience, but rather on his trust in Allah (Mighty and Majestic). This is one of the extraordinary matters that are not to be used as a standard of comparison, nor is it permissible to take it as a principle to be built upon. People are divided into two extremes regarding this story of Khalid and the poison: some deny it, although it is established from him by a sound chain of narration, and others make it a principle for this kind of misguidance that we have just invalidated. Neither these nor those have hit the mark. The story of Khalid ibn al-Walid swallowing the poison is like the story of al-As' al-Hadrami walking on the water of the sea until he reached the other shore, which was sufficient to lead the polytheists and disbelievers there to Islam when they saw such a karamah (a miracle granted to a righteous person). Matters that occur contrary to the known general laws are matters that are contrary to the rule, and what is contrary to the rule is not to be taken as a rule.
