Fatwa number ( 9899 ):
Q: I have attached to your Excellency a copy of a publication I found in one of the mosques in Riyadh , which contains a hadith narrated by the Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him). I read the hadith while I was in the mosque, and some of those present asked me about its authenticity. I sought it out in the Musnad of Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) in the book [Al-Musnad] of the Imam Ahmad and others, but I did not find this hadith. I felt some concern about it, so I hope your Excellency will graciously inform me of the extent of the authenticity of this hadith and its attribution to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). May Allah preserve you and multiply your reward. The text of the hadith is as follows: From Khalid ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: An Arab came to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have come to ask you about what will suffice me in this world and the Hereafter. He said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): "Ask about whatever you wish." He said: I want to be the most knowledgeable of people. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Fear Allah, and you will be the most knowledgeable of people." He said: I want to be the wealthiest of people. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Be content, and you will be the wealthiest of people." He said: I love to be the most just of people. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Love for people what you love for yourself, and you will be the most just of people." He said: I love to be the best of people. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Be beneficial to people, and you will be the best of people." He said: I love to be the closest of people to Allah. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Increase in the remembrance of Allah, and you will be the closest of people to Allah." He said: I love for my faith to be perfected. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Improve your character, and your faith will be perfected.
He said: I love to be among those who do good. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then He sees you." He said: I love to be among the obedient. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Perform the obligations of Allah, and you will be among the obedient." He said: I love to meet Allah pure from sins. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Take a bath from major ritual impurity to purify yourself, and you will meet Allah pure from sins." He said: I love to be gathered on the Day of Resurrection in light. He said: "Do not wrong yourself and do not wrong anyone, and you will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection in light." He said: I love for my Lord to have mercy on me on the Day of Resurrection. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Have mercy on yourself and have mercy on His servants, and your Lord will have mercy on you on the Day of Resurrection." He said: I love for my sins to be few. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Increase in seeking forgiveness, and your sins will be few." He said: I love to be the most noble of people. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Do not complain of anything in your affair to the creation, and you will be the most noble of people." He said: I love to be the strongest of people. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Rely upon Allah, and you will be the strongest of people." He said: I love for Allah to expand for me in provision. He said: "Persist in purity, and Allah will expand for you in provision." He said: I love to be among the loved ones of Allah and His Messenger. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Love what Allah and His Messenger love, and you will be among their loved ones." He said: I love to be safe from the anger of Allah. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Do not become angry with anyone of the creation of Allah, and you will be safe from the anger of Allah on the Day of Resurrection." He said: I love for my supplication to be answered. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Avoid eating what is forbidden, and your supplication will be answered." He said: I love that my Lord does not expose me on the Day of Resurrection. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Guard your private parts from unlawful sexual intercourse, so that
your Lord does not expose you on the Day of Resurrection." He said: I love for my Lord to cover me on the Day of Resurrection. He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Cover the faults of your brothers, and Allah will cover you on the Day of Resurrection." He said: What saves one from sins? Or he said: From transgressions? He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Tears, humility, and illnesses." He said: Which good deed is the greatest in the sight of Allah the Exalted? He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Good character, humility, and patience in the face of trials." He said: Which evil deed is the greatest in the sight of Allah the Exalted? He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Bad character and obeyed stinginess." He said: What calms the anger of the Lord in this world and the Hereafter? He said: "Secret charity and maintaining family ties." He said: What extinguishes the fire of Hell on the Day of Resurrection? He said (peace and blessings be upon him): "Patience in this world in the face of trials and calamities." The Imam al-Mustaghfiri said: I have not seen a hadith more comprehensive and inclusive of the virtues of religion and more beneficial than this hadith; it gathers and summarizes. It was narrated by the Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal
.

A: It is stated in [Kanz al-'Umal] in volume 16, the sixteenth: that this hadith was found in the handwriting of the Shaykh Shams al-Din ibn al-Qamah in a collection of his from Abu al-'Abbas al-Mustaghfiri , who said: I intended to go to Egypt seeking knowledge from the Imam Abu Hamid al-Misri , and I sought from him the hadith of Khalid ibn al-Walid , so he ordered me to fast for a year. Then I returned to him regarding that, and he informed me of its chain of narration from his sheikhs to Khalid ibn al-Walid , saying: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I am asking you about this world and the Hereafter. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ask about whatever you wish...
...to the end of the aforementioned hadith. And by this, you know that the hadith is not authentic; because of the unknowns in its chain. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
