The Shaykh : We are still in the hadiths concerning the encouragement of patience in adversity and the explanation of its virtue. In the previous lesson, we reached the thirty-eighth hadith in my copy, which begins with the words of the author (may Allah have mercy on him): "And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: A woman who had a form of madness came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, call upon Allah for me. He said: She said: Rather, I will be patient and there will be no reckoning for me. Narrated by al-Bazzar and Ibn Hibban in his Sahih."
This story has a great resemblance to the story we read at the end of the previous lesson. The only difference is in the type of illness that afflicted this woman and that one. The narrator says that this woman had a form of madness (lamm). Lamm is a type of madness that befalls a person in episodes, not a constant, continuous madness. Meanwhile, that other woman was afflicted with epilepsy. This is a difference, so it appears that the story of this woman is not the same as that story. Some scholars expand their assumption and suppose that it is one story, and that the one who had epilepsy is the one described here as having lamm. However, the apparent view is that there is nothing to prevent saying that there were two women, each with her own story. That woman had epilepsy, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also promised her that if she wished, he would pray for her, and if she wished, she would be patient and she would have Paradise. Here, he said to her: If you wish, I will call upon Allah and He will cure you, and if you wish, you will be patient and there will be no reckoning for you. The apparent indication from the route of narration is that they are two stories: one for the woman who had epilepsy, and another for the woman who had a type of madness, which is lamm. However, the reward is the same, because the saying of the Messenger (peace be upon him) is equivalent to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) to that woman who had epilepsy, where he said to her: So, anyone for whom there is no reckoning, there is no doubt that the outcome of their affair is entering Paradise. In any case, this hadith and that one, each of them indicates clearly and explicitly that the outcome of patience is entering Paradise.
