The questioner : The questioner says: Is it permissible for me to read the Qur'an from the mushaf in the night prayer because I do not memorize anything except Surah al-Fatihah? Then what is the daily portion of the Qur'an?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. There is no blame on a person to read from the mushaf in prayer if he does not memorize what he wants to read. There is a report (athar) regarding this from the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). However, if he does not need to read from the mushaf, he should not read from it. This is because reading from the mushaf requires carrying the mushaf, multiple unnecessary movements, and missing a recommended practice (sunnah), which is placing the hands on the chest. But in case of necessity, there is nothing wrong with it. Likewise, it appears that if a person becomes more humble (khushu') when reading from the mushaf, there is nothing wrong with it. As for the portion (ward) one reads from the Qur'an, no recommended practice (sunnah) has been transmitted regarding this. However, a person should not leave the Qur'an without reading it. He should make the reading half-monthly, meaning he completes the entire Qur'an in half a month, or in ten days, or once a month. The important thing is not to leave the Qur'an, because the entire Qur'an is good.
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
