We request clarification on the 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered) of a woman regarding clothing. What is the reason many people find Allah's creation ugly and mock people? What is the ruling on that?

The questioner : We request clarification on the correct school of thought regarding the 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered) of a woman in terms of clothing... [inaudible]...

The Shaykh : Because, unfortunately, we do not say all of them, but at least most of the women who wear the jilbab (the outer garment) are not educated in Islamic culture. And whoever among them is educated in Islamic culture is like the youth who are educated in Islamic culture but have not been raised with Islamic upbringing, neither he nor she, nor they, nor they. When Islamic culture directly touches the heart and settles in its core, as it is said, then everything one sees in the Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law) of Allah is beautiful. And to the extent that the educated person, male or female, deviates from this reality, and to the extent that he finds many of the rulings of the Shari'ah ugly, the least that can be said is that the infection spreads to our tongues, if it does not reach our hearts, and we say that this thing is ugly. And we know that it is the creation of Allah, and that the hand of the created human being has no will or acquisition in it. So how do we find it ugly?! This man is white, and this is a reality among the disbelievers; they find the appearance, stature, nose, and lips of the black man ugly. And conversely, I say, a black man may find the white man ugly, and he may describe him as a leper, when he is not a leper, but very white. So whether the white man laughs at or mocks the black man, or the black man mocks the white man, the truth is that the mockery transfers from one of them to his Creator, or to the Creator of the one whose image he finds ugly. And to this is the reference in his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:
Do not curse Time, for it is Allah Who is Time. لا تسبوا الدهر فإنّ الله هو الدهر
Sahih Muslim 2246e
Why do we not curse time? Because Allah is the one who disposes of time. So if you curse time, what is this time? Is it the Doer of what it wills, or is it a desired thing that does not desire? Yes, for the believer, it is desired and it does not desire. Desired by whom? By the Creator, the One who wills and does what He wills.
So when you curse time, this curse returns to the Creator of time. For that reason, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not curse Time, for it is Allah Who is Time. لا تسبوا الدهر فإن الله هو الدهر
Sahih Muslim 2246e
meaning the Creator of time. This is exactly as came in the authentic hadith:
Indeed, one of the greatest of the major sins is that a man curses his father. إن من أكبر الكبائر أن يسب الرجل أباه
Sahih Ibn Hibban 6:106
.

The questioner : His parents.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : His parents.

The Shaykh : It is not important afterwards. They said: "How, O Messenger of Allah?" He said:
A man curses the father of a man, so he curses his father. يسب الرجل والد الرجل فيسب والده
. Meaning, one of the greatest of the major sins is that a Muslim man causes his father to be cursed. One of the greatest of the major sins is that a Muslim causes his father to be cursed. Do you see, is it not one of the greatest of the major sins that a Muslim causes the cursing of Allah?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : That is more appropriate. So it is not permissible for us to find anything of the creation of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, ugly. Because He created it with will and choice, as He said in the Qur'an:
And your Lord creates what He wills and chooses; not for them was the choice. Exalted is Allah and high above what they associate with Him.
[Al-Qasas 28:68]
So if your wife... and I do not say "then I am among the wrongdoers," if you are afflicted with your wife and she is hairy. Is this your creation and your will, or the will of your Lord?

The questioner : The will of the Lord of the worlds.

The Shaykh : And His action? So do not find it ugly. And do not find a woman ugly if you see her with a beard. Just as you do not find a man ugly who is smooth-shaven with no beard. Because this is the creation of Allah, and this is the creation of Allah. But if you find ugly something of what you see of his face, where he has no beard, then find it ugly if that is from his action and acquisition, meaning if he shaves his beard, then find it ugly because this is from his action and his making, contrary to the action and making of Allah, where He created him with a beard. But if he is smooth-shaven with no beard, do not blame him for it, because this is creation. And likewise, if you see a woman with a beard, do not blame her, for this is the creation of Allah. Rather, I say that the completion of the wisdom of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is that His servants see a woman with a beard and a man with no beard, and that is to establish the argument against the materialist atheist from one side, and to remind the believing Muslim from another side that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, creates and chooses, and is not compelled, as those who speak of nature say, "It is just nature." Allah wills; there is no nature, but there is a Creator who does what He wills. So He created men as a general system with beards, and women without beards. Then He says to the heedless: "Be careful, do not think that this was a sudden change. This was by the will of Allah. The proof is: look at this woman with a beard and this man without a beard. The One who created this one with a beard created this one without a beard, and the One who created that one without a beard created this one with a beard. So it is not permissible to change the creation of Allah except in what has been authorized by Allah.

The questioner : On the same topic, okay, meaning, O Shaykh, if a woman grows a beard, does she shave it?

The Shaykh : No.

The questioner : Okay, this would be imitating the men.
