Is it correct to say that a certain group or a certain party is one of the seventy-two sects?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : They ask, or they wonder: Is a certain party or a certain group one of the seventy-two sects? I say: It is not permissible to answer that they are one of the seventy-two sects, or that they are not. Why? Because from experience, I know that there are individuals among them who adopt the methodology of the people of hadith and the Sunnah. Their creed is the creed of the Salaf, and their prayer and fasting are likewise. The only thing is that they have formed this party and gathered in this group, claiming that Islam cannot be established except through this gathering. So, these are partisans, but despite that, they are upon the methodology of the people of the Sunnah and they are from the people of hadith. This is the answer to what you asked.

The questioner : All right, Shaykh, there is a small comment, is that possible?

The Shaykh : Please, go ahead.

The questioner : Are there books or scholars through whom, through the books or through the scholars, people can reach this group?

The Shaykh : Of course, you have well-known books.

The questioner : And is it possible to guide the youth to these books?

The Shaykh : The books of Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, Siddiq Hasan Khan, al-Shawkani, al-San'ani, and Ibn al-Wazir. And, praise be to Allah, there are many. Now, there are some scholars in some Islamic countries who follow the methodology of the righteous Salaf. But they all vary; for example, some are prominent in tawhid (the oneness of Allah) but weak in the science of hadith. Some are prominent in fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) but not prominent in other sciences, and so on. So, students of knowledge can benefit from such individuals, both past and present, to complete the deficiency in themselves, as I mentioned earlier regarding the great scholars. No one of them is complete except through his brother. A person is strong through his brother.

Another questioner : You mentioned earlier, Professor, examples. If you remember, regarding hadith?

The Shaykh : A hadith?

Another questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : We say, for example, like Shaykh Ibn Baz and Ibn Uthaymeen. And there are, for example, in Pakistan or Kashmir, some scholars and the Salafi Association there in India. All of these follow the methodology of the people of the Sunnah and the people of hadith. O Allah, give to drink one who has given me to drink.
