Question: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is not permissible for a Muslim to have estranged relations with his brother beyond three nights, the one turning one way and the other turning the other way when they meet; the better of the two is one who is the first to give a greeting.لا يحل لمسلم أن يهجر أخاه فوق ثلاث ليال يلتقيان فيعرض هذا ويعرض هذا وخيرهما الذي يبدأ بالسلام
Sahih Muslim 2560a
, or as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said. So if this person with whom you had a dispute does not pray and does not fast,
and commits evil deeds, is it forbidden for me to boycott him, or what is the meaning of this hadith?

Answer: Boycotting a believer is not permissible for more than three days if it is over a matter of this world. Rather, he must reconcile with his brother and greet him if he meets him. Although it is not befitting to begin with boycotting over a matter of this world, if some boycotting occurs, it must not exceed three days. This is what is intended by the hadith:
It is not allowable for a Muslim to keep apart from his brother for more than three daysلا يحل لمسلم أن يهجر أخاه فوق ثلاث
Sunan Abi Dawud 4914Sahih (Al-Albani)
, meaning if the boycotting is over a matter of this world.
As for boycotting because of a sin committed by the one being boycotted, and if that sin is among the major sins and he does not abandon it, then it is obligatory to advise him and warn him of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). If he does not refrain from committing the sin and does not repent, then he is to be boycotted, because boycotting serves as a discretionary punishment for him and a deterrent, so that perhaps he may repent. However, if there is a danger in boycotting him, such as the fear that he will increase in the sin, or that the boycotting will lead to a greater harm, then it is not permissible to boycott him in this case. Boycotting the sinner is only permissible if there is a benefit behind it and no greater harm results from it. And success is from Allah.
