Continuation of the explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
We have previously discussed emigration, which is emigration of place, emigration of action, and emigration of the person. We have already spoken about emigration of place. As for emigration of action: "It is that a person should boycott what Allah has forbidden him from, namely sins and open sinfulness", as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue and hands. And a Muhajir (emigrant) is the one who gives up (abandons) all what Allah has forbidden. المسلم من سلم المسلمون من لسانه ويده ، والمهاجر من هجر ما حرم الله عليه
Sahih al-Bukhari 10
. So you boycott everything Allah has forbidden you, whether it relates to the rights of Allah or the rights of Allah's servants. So you boycott cursing, insulting, killing, deception, consuming wealth unjustly, undutifulness to parents, and severing family ties. And whatever Allah has forbidden you, you boycott it. Even if your soul calls you to it and persists with you, remember that Allah has forbidden it, so that you boycott it and stay away from it.
As for emigration of the person: The person may sometimes be required to be boycotted. The scholars said: For example, a man who openly commits sin and does not care about it; it is prescribed to boycott him if there is benefit and public benefit in boycotting him. The benefit and public benefit is that if he is boycotted, he will realize his own status and turn back from the sin. An example of this is a man known for deception in buying and selling; people boycott him, and when they boycott him, he repents from this, turns back, and regrets it. Another man deals in usury or interest; people boycott him, do not greet him, and do not speak to him. When he realizes this, he is ashamed of himself and returns to the right path. A third man, who is the greatest of them: he does not pray. This is an apostate disbeliever, may Allah protect us from that. He must be boycotted; his greeting is not returned, he is not greeted, and his supplication is not answered, until he realizes his own status, returns to Allah, and returns to Islam, and then he benefits from it. However, if the boycotting does not benefit or profit, and it is for a sin and not for disbelief—because if the boycotting is for disbelief, the disbeliever apostate is boycotted in all cases, whether it benefits or not—but the one who commits a sin less than disbelief, if there is no benefit in boycotting him, it is not permissible to boycott him. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is not lawful for a man to desert his brother Muslim for more than three nights. (It is unlawful for them that) when they meet, one of them turns his face away from the other, and the other turns his face from the former, and the better of the two will be the one who greets the other first. لا يحل لرجل أن يهجر أخاه المؤمن فوق ثلاث ، يلتقيان فيعرض هذا ويعرض هذا وخيرهما الذي يبدأ بالسلام
Sahih al-Bukhari 6077
. And it is known that sins less than disbelief, according to the people of the Sunnah and the community, do not take one out of faith. So the consideration remains after that: is the boycotting beneficial or not? If it benefits and causes the person to leave his sin, then he is boycotted. The evidence for this is the story of Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), Hilal ibn Umayyah, and Murarah ibn al-Rabi', who lagged behind the expedition to Tabuk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) boycotted them and ordered the Muslims to boycott them. But they benefited greatly from it; they benefited and turned to Allah, the earth became narrow for them despite its vastness, their souls became narrow for them, and they were certain that there is no refuge from Allah except to Him, so they repented and Allah accepted their repentance. So these are the types of emigration: emigration of place, emigration of action, and emigration of the person.
