Is it permissible for everyone who prays, performs ablution, and fasts to verbalize their intention with their tongue, or is it sufficient with the heart alone?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : In his second question, he asks: Is it permissible for everyone who prays, performs ablution, and fasts to verbalize their intention with their tongue, or is it sufficient with the heart alone?

The Shaykh : Intention in acts of worship is a condition without which the act of worship is not valid, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. إنما الأعمال بالنيات وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
. Verbalizing it is a religious innovation, so it is not recommended for a person who intends to perform ablution to say, "O Allah, I intend to perform ablution," nor for one who intends to pray to say, "O Allah, I intend to pray." If someone were to say, "I verbalize the intention to make it firm," we would ask: Is this hidden from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)? If it had been good, they would have preceded us to it. And if it was not reported that he used to verbalize the intention, that indicates that it is not part of his Sunnah or his guidance (peace and blessings be upon him). Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and benefit the Muslims through you.
O dear brothers and listeners, His Eminence Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, professor at the College of Sharia and Principles of Religion in Qassim, and preacher and imam of the Grand Mosque in the city of Unaizah, has answered your questions.
May Allah reward him for his eminence.
