A mistake occurred for me in a loud prayer, so I recited al-Fatihah quietly, but I remembered before I started reciting the surah. What is required of me?

The questioner : This questioner, A. S. al-Hamrawi, says in the first question: A mistake occurred for me in a loud prayer, so I recited al-Fatihah quietly, but I remembered before I started reciting the surah. What is required of me? Please advise us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. Reciting quietly in its place and reciting aloud in its place is a recommended practice (sunnah), not an obligation. However, it is not befitting for a person to contradict this recommended practice, because it is like the ritual of night prayer and day prayer. But if a person makes a mistake in night prayer and recites from al-Fatihah what he recited quietly, forgetting, and then remembers during the recitation of al-Fatihah, he may repeat it from the beginning aloud to preserve the recommended practice, especially if doing so removes the confusion that may arise from the congregation. He may also start from the point where he remembered. For example, if he had reached the words of Allah the Exalted
It is You we worship and You we ask for help. إِيّاكَ نَعبُدُ وَإِيّاكَ نَستَعينُ
[Al-Fatihah 1:5]
and then remembered, he may recite
Guide us to the straight path - اهدِنَا الصِّراطَ المُستَقيمَ
[Al-Fatihah 1:6]
aloud and continue. He may also return to the beginning of al-Fatihah and recite
(2) [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds - (3) The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, (4) Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. (5) It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
[Al-Fatihah 1:2-5]
. The matter is broad in this regard, so let him look at what is more appropriate and further from causing confusion.

The questioner : Very well.
