Explaining the aspects of the prohibition of smoking in Islam.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Smoking is forbidden from several angles. First, it causes harm to oneself and harm to others. I am truly amazed, by Allah, and if they were not... but there is a lesson in it; I am amazed at a man who smokes and his wife, whom Allah has kept free from smoking, how do they meet?! Breath upon breath. May Allah help her with this; do you see? [Everyone laughs!] So there is harm to oneself, harm to others that extends beyond them, but I have brought you the best example. What did Allah say?
They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَهُنَّ
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
This is an allusion to this... which does not happen between a father and his son or daughter, but for these spouses
They are clothing for you and هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
; how can she feel the pleasure of intercourse that Allah has made lawful for him and for her, while she is nearly suffocating from the stench of her husband’s mouth who is having intercourse with her? This is direct harm, a blow to the chest, I mean. If there were only this example, it would be sufficient. So there is harm to oneself, harm to others, and harm to wealth.
Take this example from the authentic Sunnah. He (peace be upon him) said:
Whoever eats from this evil tree, let him not approach our place of prayer; for the angels are pained by what the sons of Adam are pained by من أكل من هذه الشجرة الخبيثة فلا يقربَنَّ مصلَّانا ؛ فإن الملائكة تتأذَّى مما يتأذَّى منه بنو آدم
. What is the evil tree? Is it smoking? No; it is onions and garlic, which, by the agreement of doctors, both ancient and modern, have health benefits, to the extent that some medicines contain extracts derived from what? Garlic and onions. Nevertheless, because of the bad smell, what did he (peace be upon him) say?
Whoever eats from this evil tree, let him not approach our place of prayer—why?—for the angels are pained by what the sons of Adam are pained by من أكل من هذه الشجرة الخبيثة فلا يقربَنَّ مصلَّانا - ليه ؟ - فإن الملائكة تتأذَّى مما يتأذَّى منه بنو آدم
. So these people who smoke and attend the mosques harm two groups: they harm the believers who do not smoke, and some of them do smoke, and they harm the angels, who naturally do not smoke. So there is a doubling of the harm: harming some of the worshippers and harming all the worshippers through the angels who attend and exchange shifts. Because in the authentic hadiths, there are two shifts: a shift that descends for the Fajr prayer and ascends, and a shift that descends for the 'Asr prayer and ascends, and so on. So these angels are being harmed by what is lawful, which is what? Onions and garlic. To the extent that Imam Muslim narrated in his Sahih that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he entered the mosque—the Prophet’s mosque in Madinah—and smelled a bad smell of garlic or onions from one of them, he ordered him to be taken out to al-Baqi'. Not outside the mosque! To the cemetery.

Another questioner : How far is the distance, my master?

The Shaykh : The distance does not concern us; the allusion concerns us. What does this mean? That it is not fitting for him to live with the living; it is fitting for him to live with the dead. Because the dead do not feel; do they perceive a good smell or a bad one? This is regarding the good, onions and garlic. So what about the evil, which is not eaten, not chewed, and nothing else, but rather one smokes it?

Another questioner : ... .

The Shaykh: Allah is the Greatest!
These evidences are all sufficient. One of these evidences is sufficient to show that smoking is forbidden. What more is needed...?
