Is it permissible to mix between two recitations at the same time?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: I mean, is it permissible to mix between two or three recitations at the same time?

The Shaykh: Yes, indeed. This is a significant question, and the answer is: Yes, contrary to what is heard from some reciters. In truth, Abu Mu'adh, what befell the reciters is what befell the later jurists. Is it permissible to mix between the schools of jurisprudence? We say: It is permissible and it is not permissible. It is permissible to take from every school what agrees with the Book and the Sunnah, but it is not permissible to take from every school what agrees with our desires and whims. Do you understand? This is called *talfiq* (piecemeal selection), and *talfiq* is not permissible, because *talfiq* is a way to escape from the rulings of the Shari'ah. If something is valid in this school, it is valid in that school; if something is permissible in this school, it is permissible in that school. And by this method of *talfiq*, the Muslim escapes from the obligations of the Shari'ah. This *talfiq* is not permissible.
As for if his constant habit is to follow the correct ruling from every school, whether it is in his favor or against him, that is following the truth, and that is proceeding with insight, as He - the Exalted - said:
This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me قُلْ هَذِهِ سَبِيلِي أَدْعُو إِلَى اللَّهِ عَلَى بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَنِي
[Yusuf 12:108]
. We give an example. I, for instance, grew up as a Hanafi, the son of a Hanafi. The school in which I grew up, and in which my father before me grew up, holds that blood flowing in the amount of a thousand drops invalidates the ablution. So when our Lord - Mighty and Majestic - facilitated for me the study of the Sunnah and looking into it, I found first: that there is no evidence that this little blood invalidates the ablution. And on the contrary, I found what indicates that blood, no matter how much it is, does not invalidate the ablution. Among this is the story of the Messenger - peace and blessings be upon him - when he returned from one of the expeditions and evening overtook them in a valley. Naturally, they would sleep and spend the night in that valley to rest from the hardship of the journey. But since they were returning from the expedition, it was wise for the commander of the army, especially since he was Muhammad ibn Abdullah - may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him - to be cautious lest an enemy ambush him while he is sleeping and his army is with him. Therefore, it was wise and a matter of military strategy that he said to his companions around him:
Who will guard us tonight? مَن يكلَؤُنا الليلة ؟
Who will guard us tonight? Who will watch over us? So two young men from the Ansar stood up, one from the Aws and the other from the Khazraj, and they said: We will, O Messenger of Allah. Meaning, we will perform this duty, the duty of guarding.
And this rapid response from these two young Ansari men is very natural; because they were raised under the eye of the Messenger of Allah - may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him - and they lived under his shelter and upbringing with the best upbringing. And from his upbringing - peace and blessings be upon him - of these noble companions, he was constantly reminding them with such as his saying - may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him and his family:
There are two eyes that shall not be touched by the Fire: An eye that wept from the fear of Allah, and an eye that spent the night standing on guard in the cause of Allah. عينان لا تمسُّهما النار ؛ عينٌ بكت من خشية الله ، وعينٌ حرست في سبيل الله
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1639Hasan (Darussalam)
. So it was natural that these two young men would hasten to fulfill the request of the Messenger of Allah - may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him - with his saying:
Who will guard us tonight? مَن يكلَؤُنا الليلة ؟
They said: We will, O Messenger of Allah. So he said to them:
Be at the mouth of the *shib* كونا على فم الشِّعب
. The *shib* is a path like the paths we see in these mountains, the mountains, a narrow path like this where people walk. This is the *shib*. He said to them:
Be at the mouth of the *shib* كونا على فم الشِّعب
So they set out, and they took on the guard duty which the Messenger of Allah - may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him - entrusted to them.
But from their intelligence and their religion, they did not see any benefit in wasting that time just in guarding, but rather in worshipping Allah - Glorified and Exalted is He. So they agreed to take turns guarding. One would guard half the night while the other sleeps, to exchange the guard duty later. So one of them stood up to guard, then from his greed for good, he did not suffice with just performing the duty of guarding, but he stood up to pray while watching. And what the Messenger - peace and blessings be upon him - feared was that an enemy would ambush him, and therefore he placed these two guards... where there was a spy from the spies of the disbelieving polytheists. And this spy - meaning the spy - was outside the village which the Messenger of Allah - may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him - had raided. When he returned to his village, he found the situation calm and quiet. What is the news? The Messenger of Allah - may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him - raided the village, and killed whom he killed, and took captive whom he took captive of the men and women. And this man was among those for whom people were killed and women and daughters were taken captive, and so on. Therefore, he said: I will not enter the village until I take revenge from the companions of the Messenger of Allah - may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him. Therefore, he set out to follow the traces of the army of the Messenger of Allah - may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him - until he saw them descend in that valley. So he lay in wait and hid behind a rock, waiting for the opportunity to escape? To take his revenge. And behold, he found the two young men standing before him within bowshot. But one of them - as we said - was lying on his side sleeping, and the other was standing praying. So he took an arrow from his quiver and placed it on his bow and aimed it at the standing companion who was praying.
The narrator of the hadith - who is Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari - says: He placed it in his leg. He does not say: He shot him in the leg. This is a very wonderful Arabic style; as if he placed it with the precision of the hand.

Another questioner : ... .

The Shaykh: Yes, from the precision of the hit, he placed it in his leg, so blood gushed from him. So what did this companion do? What did he do? He did not cut off his prayer - and this is the point now - but he bent down a little and took the arrow, as if he were pulling a thorn from his leg, and threw it away like this, and continued to pray. He shot him the second time and placed it in his leg, and he shot him the third time and placed it in his leg; until the man completed two rak'ahs. Then either his companion woke up or he woke him up. The important thing is that his sleeping companion was shocked by the matter; the blood was flowing from him. So he said to him - the wounded man said: I was in a surah I was reciting - this is the remembrance; the tongue and the heart are one - I was in a surah I was reciting, and had I not feared that I would waste a post which the Messenger of Allah - may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him - placed me to guard, it would have been...
