Beginning the discussion on the praise of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for his Lord in times of good news and calamity.

The Shaykh : I wish to remind you of something I have noticed in some of our good brothers, the Salafis, if Allah wills. When I ask one of them, "How are you?" he answers, "Praise be to Allah in every circumstance." This answer gives me the impression that his condition is not as we hope. The reason is that I am influenced by a hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrated by the Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), which states:
-- Come closer, come closer; if Allah wills, you will not be separated in seeing Him --
This is because it is established from the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had two phrases of praise that he would use. When something that pleased him and made him happy came to him, he would say:
Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi bi ni'matihi tatimmus-salihat (Praise is to Allah by Whose grace good deeds are completed) الحمد لله الذي بنعمته تتم الصالحات
Sunan Ibn Majah 3803Da'if (Darussalam)
. And when something that distressed him and saddened him came to him, he would say:
Al-Hamdulillah 'Ala Kulli Hal (All praise is due to Allah in every circumstance). الحمد لله على كل حال
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2738Hasan (Darussalam)
." So, when I interact with this hadith—and naturally, I follow it because it is established for me—I interact with the words of my companion who answered me when I said, "How are you?" and he said, "Praise be to Allah in every circumstance." This means that I should ask him and surprise him as he surprised me, and say, "Good, if Allah wills, what is wrong?" He would say, "Nothing." So, we should remember this hadith and put everything in its proper place. If a person is asked about his condition and a blessing has come to him that he is pleased with and happy about, he should let his companion know of his condition by saying, "Praise be to Allah by whose blessing good deeds are completed." If, may Allah forbid, the matter is the opposite, he should also let him know, so that perhaps a righteous supplication from him may reach him. He would say in his answer, "Praise be to Allah in every circumstance." It was said long ago, "You must have a brother who consoles you, or amuses you, or sympathizes with you." So, this is the etiquette of praise: either "Praise be to Allah by whose blessing good deeds are completed," or "Praise be to Allah in every circumstance." We should not place this in the place of that, or that in the place of this. This is what came to my mind, and I mentioned it to you.
