A man whose wife fell ill and he treated her with a Muslim doctor, and she recovered, then the illness returned, and he refused to take her to the doctor. Is there any sin on this husband?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Abu Layla : , O Shaykh: A committed husband has a sick wife. Before this husband’s guidance, his wife was ill and he took her to more than one doctor. The last decision from the doctor was that your wife needs a surgical operation. This husband agreed to the operation, and the doctor said the treatment for this illness would last only two years. After the illness returned to the wife, the husband was committed and extreme. I told him, “The wife wants to go to the doctor,” and he said to her, “Allah is the Healer; I will not go with you to the doctor.” If this wife is afflicted with something of the illness that may prolong her condition, is there a sin on this husband if he does not take her to the doctor?

The Shaykh : The answer: The matter differs from one illness to another. If the illness is such that a Muslim doctor rules that it may expose the woman to death, and that it is necessary to perform an operation on her, then the husband is responsible for her if any complication arises. However, if the Muslim doctor rules that this illness poses no danger to the woman, especially if the treatment requires exposing the woman’s awrah (the part of the body that must be covered), then it is not permissible except if the Muslim doctor rules that treatment is necessary. In this case, one should look for and search for a female doctor. If one is found, that is fine; otherwise, one turns to a Muslim doctor known for his good character. If the illness is feared to cause harm to the wife, then the husband is responsible in this situation. And if he is truly committed, as stated, then among the results of his commitment, if he is sincere in it, is that he adopts the command of his Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in His saying:
Seek treatment, O servants of Allah, for Allah who sends down the disease also sends down its cure. تداووا عباد الله فإن الله الذي ينزل الداء إلا وأنزل له دواء
.
So this husband must ask the skilled Muslim doctor about this illness that has afflicted that wife: is there fear for her from it or not? If the answer is that there is fear, then he must immediately take her to the female doctor, as we said, if one is found; otherwise, to the male doctor. Have I answered you?
Abu Layla : Yes, may Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : And beware of that.
