The first question of Fatwa number ( 4671 )
Q 1: I am a student in the Faculty of Medicine, and next year, if Allah wills, the course on gynecology and obstetrics will be required of us. Therefore, I ask the following: A - Is it permissible for me to attend the practical studies where the woman's body might be exposed? B - Is it permissible for a male doctor to specialize in gynecology and obstetrics, or is this limited to female doctors? C - Is it permissible for a woman suffering from any disease other than gynecological or obstetric diseases to go to an eye doctor or an ear, nose, and throat doctor, for example, given that there are female specialists in these fields? D - Is it permissible for a female doctor to examine a male patient?
A 1: A, B: If there are sufficient female specialists in gynecology and obstetrics, then they should be relied upon, and it is not permissible for you to study in this field, nor to look at a woman's awrah (private parts) through training in examining her or performing surgery on her. However, if the number of female specialists in gynecology and obstetrics is not sufficient to carry out the necessary duties in this area, and the need of the Muslims calls for your specialization in it, then it is permissible for you to study in it, and you are granted a dispensation to see what necessity requires to be exposed of the woman's body for the purpose of examination or surgery. C - If it is possible for the woman to have her disease diagnosed and treated by a female doctor who is an expert in the type of her disease, it is not permissible for her to be examined or treated by a male doctor; otherwise, it is permissible for her to do so. D - It is permissible for her to examine and treat male patients if there is a need for it and no male is available to do so; otherwise, it is prohibited, and it becomes obligatory for a male doctor to take charge of his treatment. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
