The questioner : From the questions of this questioner, she says: O honorable Shaykh, it is a given that love is something beyond a person's will and not in their control, so does a person sin if they love one parent more than the other? And if one of them has passed away, does this mean they deserve more supplication? My father (may Allah have mercy on him and grant him Paradise) was the one who, after Allah, was responsible for my success in life, and he is the one who gave me the confidence I was lacking. What are the good deeds that I must do toward him? May you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : Yes. The matter is as the questioner stated: a person does not control love or hatred; it is a matter that Allah the Exalted places in the heart. However, a person must not be influenced by this love except to the extent of the command or the ruling of the Shari'ah. For example, if a man loves one of his sons more than the other, which is a common occurrence, it is not permissible for him to prefer this loved one over his brothers in matters that he is not obligated to do. For instance, he should not give him a car, grant him land, or give him money without giving the same to his brothers. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Bashir ibn Sa'd a gift for his son Nu'man, Bashir went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to have him witness this. He said to him:
Do you have sons? ألك بنون؟
He said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said:
Did you give them the same? هل نحلتهم مثل هذا؟
meaning, "Did you give them the same?" He said, "No." He said:
Be afraid of Allah, and be just to your children. اتقوا الله واعدلوا بين أولادكم
Sahih al-Bukhari 2587
He did not say, "Which one do you love more, and give the one you love more than the others."
The important point is that love is in the hands of Allah, as the questioner said, and a person cannot repel it, increase it, or decrease it. However, it is not permissible for this love to have an effect that leads to disobedience to the command of Allah and His Messenger.
As for her praise of her father, may Allah forgive him and reward him with good for the kindness he showed her. The best thing she can offer him is to supplicate for him, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious child, who prays for him (for the deceased). إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاثة إلا من صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Sahih Muslim 1631
So she should increase seeking forgiveness for him and making supplication, and she should honor his friend if he has one, and she should maintain the family ties that are the connection between them. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
