The Shaykh’s clarification that the khimar is the head covering, not as some people assume.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Abu Layla : Regarding the covering mentioned by Ibn Kathir, it is the chest and the neck with respect to the verse. Naturally, we can derive evidence from this statement. I don’t know if this just came to my mind, but for example, a man’s awrah is between the navel and the knee. What is wrapped around this area from the back or the side is considered part of the awrah. Likewise, the khimar must be in this state.

The Shaykh : How is the khimar in this state?
Abu Layla : I mean, the khimar now covers the chest, the shoulders, and the back.

The Shaykh : The khimar is the head covering; this is its meaning in Arabic. It is wrapped around the neck and over the chest. This is the khimar.
Al-Halabi : Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.

The Shaykh : And peace be upon you, and mercy of Allah and His blessings.
Al-Halabi : How are you?

The Shaykh : Welcome. You are talking about the hijab.
Abu Layla: Yes.

The Shaykh : This is another point. Our shaykhs there do not dwell on it. They assume that as soon as a woman throws her jilbab over her head, she has fulfilled her obligation. Whereas there are two obligations:
The first obligation is the khimar, and this khimar covers only the head and the shirt. The opening of the shirt is the chest, meaning:
to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests وليضربن بخمرهن على جيوبهن
[An-Nur 24:31]
This is the pocket; this is the first obligation. The second obligation is throwing the jilbab over this khimar. The jilbab does not obligatorily cover the face, nor what? The khimar covers the face. And among the deviations we read in some of these responses is that they say: the khimar is what covers the head and the face. This is undoubtedly an innovated interpretation, for one who knows two things, not one: first, he knows the language and the interpretation of the khimar in it, and the other thing: he knows the Sunnah and what came in it regarding the mention of the khimar. Among the well-known hadiths among almost all those engaged in knowledge is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Allah does not accept the prayer of a woman who menstruates (i.e., an adult woman) except with a head cover. لا يقبل الله صلاة حائض إلا بخمار
Sunan Ibn Majah 655Sahih (Darussalam)
And no one says that this khimar covers the face in prayer. On the contrary, they say, even those who obligate a woman to cover her face say: in prayer she uncovers it. Do you see?
