The Meaning of the Sunnah Mentioned in the Hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The reason for this is very important, and it is that it refers to what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was upon, which is called the Sunnah. The Sunnah mentioned in more than one hadith includes his statement (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of the group of men who asked the wives of the Prophet about his worship, his fasting, and his night prayers, and about his visiting his wives. The story is well known, and I do not wish to lengthen this beyond what the question requires, for this hadith alone deserves a full lecture of at least an hour. It is sufficient for me from it, or in it, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said at the end of this well-known hadith of the group of men, after mentioning his statement (peace be upon him)
As for me, I am the most afraid of you regarding Allah and the most mindful of you regarding Allah. As for me, I fast and I break the fast, I stand in prayer at night and I sleep, and I marry women. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not from me. أما إني أخشاكم لله و أتقاكم لله أما إني أصوم و أفطر و أقوم الليل و أنام و أتزوّج النساء فمن رغب عن سنّتي فليس منّي
And he who turns away from my Sunnah, he has no relation with Me فمن رغب عن سنّتي فليس منّي
Sahih Muslim 1401
, that his Sunnah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) does not mean the technical meaning among the jurists, which defines the Sunnah as that which is not obligatory. It does not mean that the Messenger (peace be upon him) intended, in any hadith where the word Sunnah is mentioned, the meaning of the Sunnah as defined in the branches of jurisprudence, where they say, for example, the obligatory acts of prayer, the recommended acts of prayer, and they define the Sunnah as "that for which its doer is rewarded and its leaver is not punished." This is not the intended meaning in such statements as his (peace and blessings be upon him)
And he who turns away from my Sunnah, he has no relation with Me فمن رغب عن سنّتي فليس منّي
Sahih Muslim 1401
. Rather, the intended meaning is the methodology, the system, and the path upon which the Messenger (peace be upon him) proceeded from the beginning of his call to Allah until his last breath. This system, this starting point, and this path upon which the Messenger (peace be upon him) proceeded is what is meant by the Sunnah when it is mentioned in a hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is clear that the Sunnah, in this intended meaning from the hadith of the Messenger (peace be upon him), means Islam in its entirety, which cannot be divided, whether in its obligations, its recommended practices, its recommended acts, its encouraged acts, or its permissible acts, whether in the style of the call or in the essence of the call. This is the meaning of the Sunnah
And he who turns away from my Sunnah, he has no relation with Me فمن رغب عن سنّتي فليس منّي
Sahih Muslim 1401
