What is the ruling on saying: “Allah and His Messenger know best”
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And beware of saying, on an occasion like this, “Allah and His Messenger know best,” because this is verbal shirk (associating partners with Allah). I think the enthusiastic questioners did not understand my last comment, because they are thinking about what they want to ask, and I am reminding you of something very important. One person says to another: “Do you know what we ate for dinner last night?” The other says: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” Is that right or not? This is a guest who is a Bedouin… wait, may Allah reward you. So this is not permissible to say, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) does not know everything that happens and occurs. That is knowledge by which Allah has exclusively distinguished Himself. But where does the doubt come from? There are many hadiths in which the Messenger (peace be upon him) asked his Companions about certain matters on some occasions, and their answer was “Allah and His Messenger know best.” That is one thing. And after the Messenger (peace be upon him) passed from this fleeting worldly life to the barzakh (the interval between death and resurrection) in which he is, he receives some of his reward from his Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He, for fulfilling his duty of calling and conveying the message. During his lifetime, he was connected to the heavens by a strong bond, namely the revelation from the heavens. That is from one aspect. From another aspect, when he asked his Companions, it was as if the Companions realized that he (peace be upon him) was asking them about something he already knew, and therefore their answer was “Allah and His Messenger know best.” And indeed, what they realized was confirmed when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would inform them about the thing he had asked them about. The examples that pass by the reader of the Sunnah and the researcher in it are many, and very many. Perhaps the most famous of them, which is not hidden from any of the attendees, if Allah wills, is the story of Jibril (peace be upon him), narrated by 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar and also by his father 'Umar ibn al-Khattab. In it, it says: “While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a man came, with clothes intensely white and hair intensely black, no trace of travel was seen on him, and none of us recognized him, until he approached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and placed his knees on his knees and his hands on his thighs, then he said: ‘O Muhammad, inform me about Islam… inform me about faith… inform me about excellence in worship… inform me about the Hour.’” And so on until the end of the hadith. Then this man turned away. He (peace be upon him) said to them, and here is the point: They said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: Musnad Ahmad 184Sahih (Darussalam) So in such a question from the Messenger (peace be upon him) to the Companions, there is an indication to these responsible people that the Messenger knows, and therefore they said to him in such a question: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” But today, do you know what I want to ask you now? “Allah and His Messenger know best.” No, the Messenger does not know the unseen [Al-Jinn 72:26-27] from a living Messenger who conveys the messages of his Lord. But after his death, he is now on the path to meeting his reward from his Lord. So I said earlier, by way of warning, that I say in such a question: “Allah knows best.” So do not say today, in any matter, “Allah and His Messenger know best,” unless the matter is explicitly stated in the Book and the Sunnah, and we are certain that the Messenger knew about it. In that case, our situation is the situation of the Companions. This is a reminder, and the reminder benefits the believers.
Do you know who the questioner is?
أتدرون من السائل ؟That was Jibreel who came to teach you your religion.
ذاك جبريل جاءكم يعلمكم دينكم(26) [He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone (27) Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before each messenger and behind him observers
