The questioner : On one occasion, we had a lesson in Qur'anic recitation, and menstruation came upon her. Some people said to her: It is permissible for you to touch and browse through the Qur'an in the case of teaching only, while some said: It is not permissible for you to do so. What is the correct ruling in this matter? May you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : The correct ruling in this matter, and knowledge belongs to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), is that it is not permissible for one who is not in a state of ablution to touch the mushaf unless there is a barrier. As for the menstruating woman reading the Qur'an, there is no harm in it if the intention is teaching or learning, or the morning and evening remembrances. However, if the menstruating woman's intention in reading the Qur'an is to worship through it, there is a difference of opinion among the scholars: some permit it, and some do not. The precaution is not to read for the purpose of worship, because if she reads for worship, the matter falls between being sinful or being rewarded. It is known that scrupulousness lies in leaving what one doubts for what one does not doubt.

The questioner : May Allah preserve you, O honorable Shaykh.
