Can we replace the term Salafi with Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : If we return to the discussion regarding the Salafi call and being named Salafi.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : There are now people who are also saying something new, other than the word Muslims. They now say we call ourselves Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah. Does the previous research apply to them?

The Shaykh : We have presented this to Dr. Nasir al-Omar. We presented this admission to him. I told him that "Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah" is an elastic term that includes the Maturidiyyah, the Asha'irah, and the people of hadith. And you say that these people have a deviation in their creed regarding the divine attributes. Therefore, in our opinion, it is not permissible to use this term. It is the same statement we recounted here just now, with some brevity there. However, I noticed this usage in more than one place in the books of these brothers, especially in the magazine al-Sunnah published by Muhammad Sarur. And I felt that there is a signal of diluting the Salafi call, which is based on the Book and the Sunnah and the methodology of the Salaf al-Salih, in order to bring all Muslim sects, at least those of the four schools of jurisprudence, into the circle of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah. So we told them: No, this term includes those who differ from us in our Salafi creed. The same statement you heard recorded just now applies to this term. That is, it is not enough to say Muslim. It is not enough to say Muslim on the Book and the Sunnah. It is not enough to be a Muslim on the methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah. This is not enough, because as they say: "Everyone claims a connection to Layla, but Layla does not approve of that for them." And I remember clearly that I said in some gatherings, and perhaps one of them was my gathering with Professor 'Abd al-Halim al-Misri, which was previously mentioned regarding my discussion with him. I said to him: You will not find in all the existing sects, even among those who claim to belong to Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah, anyone who dares to say, "I am a Salafi." Rather, if you say "on the methodology of the Salaf al-Salih," they refuse that. They say "Book and Sunnah." Because I believe this creed, and perhaps for the first time I am making it explicit, that it is not enough to rely on the Qur'an, because the Sunnah explains the Qur'an. Likewise, it is not enough in the last times to rely on the Book and the Sunnah, because the methodology of the Salaf also explains the Book and the Sunnah. Is that clear?

The questioner : Clear, my Shaykh. May Allah reward you with good. May I ask?

The Shaykh : Please.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good. Yesterday I researched with the brother Khalid regarding the saved sect.

The Shaykh : Yes.
