The questioner : The book "Tanbih al-Ghafilin bi-Ahadith Sayyid al-Anbiya' wa al-Mursal" (Awakening the Negligent with the Hadiths of the Master of the Prophets and Messengers), authored by the jurist and ascetic Shaykh Nasir al-Din Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Samarqandi. He says: I ask about this book and the hadiths contained in it; are they authentic? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Yes. This book is like other books of admonition.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : It contains authentic hadiths, it contains good hadiths, it contains weak hadiths, and it contains fabricated hadiths.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Therefore, it should not be read except by a student of knowledge who can distinguish between the hadiths in it that are accepted and those that are not, so that he may be clear in his understanding and so that he does not attribute to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) what he did not say or what is not authentically attributed to him. For whoever narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a hadith that he knows to be a lie is one of the liars. And it is authentically reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that whoever deliberately lies about him should take his place in the Fire.
So my advice to one who has no knowledge of hadith is not to read in this book. And one who has knowledge that distinguishes between the authentic, or rather between the accepted and the not accepted, and sees benefit in reading it, let him do so. And if he sees that it diverts him from reading what is more beneficial for him, let him not waste his time reading it. Yes.

The questioner : The listener M.S. says in his question.
