Question:
Evidence has come regarding the reward from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) for reading the Noble Qur'an. Does one also receive reward from Allah for reading the Prophetic hadiths? Please advise us—may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Reading the Qur'an to draw near to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) carries a great reward, and likewise, reading and memorizing the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) carries a great reward; for that is worship of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and a path to seeking knowledge and understanding the religion.
The legal evidence indicates the obligation of learning and understanding the religion, so that the Muslim worships his Lord with insight. Among this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The best among you is he who learns and teaches the Qur'an.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1452Sahih (Al-Albani)
and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
He upon whom Allah intends to bestow goodness, He confers upon him an insight in religion
Sahih Muslim 1037a
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
and he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur'an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Himمن سلك طريقًا يلتمس فيه علمًا سهل الله له به طريقًا إلى الجنة، وما اجتمع قومٌ في بيت من بيوت الله يتلون كتاب الله ويتدارسونه بينهم إلا نزلت عليهم السكينة، وغشيتهم الرحمة، وحفتهم الملائكة، وذكرهم الله فيمن عنده
Sahih Muslim 2699a
. Muslim narrated it in his Sahih.
There are many hadiths regarding the reading of the Qur'an, among which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Read the Qur'an; for it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its companions.
. Muslim narrated it.
And one day, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his companions:
Would any of you like to go to Batihan (a valley in Madinah) and come back with two large camels, without sin or severing family ties?
They said: We all love that, O Messenger of Allah. He said:
For it is better for one of you to go to the mosque and learn two verses from the Book of Allah than to have two large camels, and three is better than three, and four is better than four, and a number of camels equal to the number of verses.
Muslim narrated it in the Sahih.
This indicates the virtue of reading and learning the Qur'an. Among this is the famous hadith of Ibn Mas'ud, narrated in al-Jami' al-Tirmidhi with a good chain, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward
Riyad as-Salihin 999
.
And likewise the Sunnah; if the believer learns it by reading the hadiths, studying them, memorizing them, and knowing which are authentic and which are not, he will have a great reward for that; for this is part of learning knowledge, about which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for himمن سلك طريقًا يلتمس فيه علمًا سهل الله له به طريقًا إلى الجنة
Sahih Muslim 2699a
—as mentioned previously.
This indicates that reading the verses and reflecting on them, studying the hadiths and memorizing them, and discussing them, with the desire for knowledge and understanding the religion and acting upon it, is among the causes of entering Paradise and being saved from the Fire. And likewise, the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
He upon whom Allah intends to bestow goodness, He confers upon him an insight in religion
Sahih Muslim 1037a
, which is agreed upon as authentic, indicates the virtue of knowledge and seeking it, and that it is among the signs of goodness—as mentioned previously.
So, understanding the religion is achieved through the Book and through the Sunnah. Thus, understanding the Sunnah is among the indications that Allah intends good for the servant, just as understanding the Qur'an indicates that. The evidence for this is abundant—and praise be to Allah.
