He spoke about "al-Makr" (the schemer): is it one of the names of Allah or not?

The questioner : Most of the additions to the ninety-nine names are not accepted, meaning, for example, they counted al-Makr (the schemer) among His names.

The Shaykh : What?

The questioner : Al-Makr (the schemer).

The Shaykh : Al-Makr (the schemer)! No, this is a derivation; it is not a name.

The questioner : And al-Mukhadhi' (the deceiver), al-Mustahzi' (the mocker), al-Mubli (the one who tests), al-Bali (the one who destroys), al-Shay' (the thing), and al-Mumkin (the possible). And for this reason, Ibn al-Qayyim was severe in his commentary on Ibn al-Arabi regarding his listing of these names.

The Shaykh : There is no doubt that this is not a name; it is a name from our side, a derivation.

The questioner : I found that what is transmitted in the Book and the Sunnah exceeds the ninety-nine by a few names, approximately six or seven names only, which can be applied to the criteria and rules derived from the Book and the Sunnah.

The Shaykh : Yes, it is a beautiful thing. I do not know how Ibn al-Arabi and Ibn al-Wazir permitted the derivation!

The questioner : Ibn al-Arabi explicitly states its permissibility.

The Shaykh : Here, every action of our Lord, Mighty and Majestic, that He attributes to Himself, he derives a name from it!

The questioner : Yes, and for this reason he says the names are more than this.

The Shaykh : For example, he names his Lord al-Mubki (the one who makes cry) and al-Mudhakk (the one who makes laugh)!

The questioner : This was not transmitted, but for example, al-Juwayzi made it a name:
And your Lord has come وجاء ربك

The Shaykh : Also, al-Mustawi (the One who rises above).

The questioner : Yes, al-Mustawi (the One who rises above) is a name for him. He mentioned it in *Ahkam al-Quran* when he said:
And to Allah belong the best names ولله الأسماء الحسنى
[Al-A'raf 7:180]

The Shaykh : This is undoubtedly an undesirable expansion.

The questioner : And for this reason, he says they reach a thousand, according to Ibn al-Arabi.

The Shaykh : In this manner, they increase further. The hadith says:
You named yourself with it سميت به نفسك

Another questioner: Have you seen the complete edition of the book *Al-Awasim*?

The questioner : No.
Another questioner: It is in two volumes, printed in Algeria. It has research on the names and attributes, and Ibn al-Qayyim responded to it in *Al-Sawa'iq al-Mursalah*. Because it is by Ibn al-Arabi, as you remember, our Shaykh says that istiwa' (rising above the Throne) has dozens of meanings, and so on. This statement is not in the *Al-Awasim* that is in our hands; al-Kawthari and others transmitted it. It is only in the complete edition in two volumes. I think it has more extensive research than *Al-Ahkam*. And Allah knows best.

The Shaykh : Okay, was this book printed in Algeria long ago?
Another questioner: Yes, long ago.

The questioner : I tried to extract the rules that clarify what is among His names and what is not, before determining the names and attributes. I found approximately ten rules. For example, one is that the name must be suitable for supplication. If it is not suitable for supplication, for example, they made al-Zari' (the planter) one of His names, or "O Makr (O Schemer)," or "O Shay' (O Thing)," or "O Mumkin (O Possible)." You do not accept supplication with these. From that, for example, it must be suitable for the servants to worship with it.

The Shaykh : Yes, that is right.

The questioner : From that, it must be explicitly mentioned in the Book and the Sunnah.
I tried to extract the rules that the Salaf indicated, scattered here and there, to reach the closest number.

The Shaykh : And perhaps it is under print?

The questioner : Yes, it is under print now.

The Shaykh : Here or abroad?

The questioner : Here. It is being described and printed in Beirut, if Allah wills.
