The regular voluntary prayers (Rawatib) - 2

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Sometimes, after I pray, I feel anxious, or drowsiness or boredom takes over, so I do not pray the regular voluntary prayer (Rawatib). Is there anything required of me in that?

Answer: One should strive to maintain the regular voluntary prayers (Rawatib), because they are a confirmed recommended practice (Sunnah). If a person gives in to laziness, the laziness increases. As for drowsiness, if it is overwhelming drowsiness such that it overpowers you during the prayer and you do not know what you are saying, then you should sleep. However, if it is merely light drowsiness, you should not leave the Rawatib, especially since the Rawatib does not take a long time. You should strive to maintain it as much as you are able.

Question: If I arrive for the midday prayer (Zuhr), for example, before the call to prayer (Adhan) and I pray four rak'ahs, and then the mu'adhdhin calls the Adhan, is that sufficient for the Rawatib, or must I pray two rak'ahs of the Zuhr Rawatib after the Adhan?

Answer: The important thing is that the prayer is after the time has entered. If the time for Zuhr has entered and you intended this prayer to be the Rawatib, then that is sufficient.
However, if the time has not entered yet, then the prayer you prayed before the time entered is not sufficient for the Rawatib. Likewise, if you did not intend the Rawatib and you prayed a general prayer without intending it to be the Rawatib, then it is not sufficient for the Rawatib. As he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.إنما الأعمال بالنيات وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
So, if you intended the Rawatib and the time had entered, it is valid and sufficient for the Rawatib. However, if these two conditions are not met, it is a general prayer.
