The questioner : We have a widespread phenomenon, which is the direction of many people to the graveyards after finishing the Eid prayer. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah in your view regarding this act?

The Shaykh : This act is a religious innovation (bid'ah). It was not the way of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to habitually visit the graves on the day of Eid. Rather, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the visiting of graves in a general, absolute manner. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I used to forbid you to visit the graves, but now visit them, for they remind you of the Hereafter. كنت نهيتكم عن زيارة القبور فزوروها فإنها تذكركم الأخرة
Musnad Ahmad 1236, 1237Sahih, because of corroborating evidence; this is a da'eef isnad because of the weakness of Ali bin Zaid and Rabee'ah bin an-Nabighah and his father are unknown], Sahih because of corroborating eviden (Darussalam)
A person should visit the graves at any time, whether at night or during the day. It is not restricted to a specific time, neither on Friday nor on the day of Eid. In fact, we can say that whenever his heart becomes hard and he forgets the Hereafter, he should go out to the graveyards and visit them so that they remind him of the Hereafter, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned in his saying:
For they remind you of the Hereafter فإنها تذكركم الأخرة
. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. This listener, Muhammad Yusuf from the Arab Republic of Egypt, says.
