A Refutation of Those Who Say That the Meanings of the Names and Attributes of Allah in the Qur'an and Sunnah Are Not Known to Us

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Thus, this verse constitutes a clear refutation of those who say: "The meanings of the Names and Attributes of Allah in the Qur'an are not known to us." Pay attention, may Allah bless you. There are people who say that the Names and Attributes of Allah in the Qur'an are not known in meaning. If you ask them, "What is the meaning of Allah the Exalted saying:
The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established. الرحمن على العرش استوى
[Taha 20:5]
," they say, "I do not know its meaning, and no one knows its meaning except Allah." According to their claim, this Noble Qur'an would be unknown in meaning regarding the greatest thing for which it was revealed, which is knowing the Names and Attributes of Allah. This is the methodology of the Salaf, meaning that the methodology of the Salaf is not knowing the meanings of the Names and Attributes of Allah. Undoubtedly, this is a lie about the Salaf or ignorance of their methodology. The Salaf understood the meanings of the Names and Attributes of Allah, but they did not know their realities or how they are.
