The Shaykh : The explanation. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them until the Day of Judgment.
The author said:
"And among the wonders is that they refuted *** those who affirmed the names without meanings"
Among the wonders is that they—meaning those who denied the attributes of action and said: "The action is the very thing acted upon, and its attribution to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is relative, not real"—refuted those who affirmed the names without meanings. They are the Mu'tazilah, who affirmed for Allah the names without the meanings. They said: "Allah is All-Hearing without hearing, and All-Seeing without sight." They said: "These names are dead names, like stone, cow, camel, and sheep, and the like, which do not indicate a meaning."
