A word by the Shaykh on the recipients of zakah and the interpretation of His saying, the Exalted

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : With excellence until the Day of Judgment. As for what follows: This is the second night of meeting with our brothers after the tarawih prayer in the Sacred Mosque in the year 1411. We ask Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, to make these meetings blessed and beneficial, and to return us and you to similar ones in safety, faith, and well-being.
Indeed, O brothers, the last thing we spoke about was zakah, and we explained some of the wealth subject to zakah. As for this night, we will devote the discussion to the people of zakah: who are those who deserve it? Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has taken upon Himself to explain who deserves zakah, and He said, Exalted and Majestic is He:
Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler إنما الصدقات للفقراء والمساكين والعاملين عليها والمؤلفة قلوبهم وفي الرقاب والغارمين وفي سبيل الله وابن السبيل
[At-Tawbah 9:60]
And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has taken upon Himself to distribute these alms, and He said, Glorified and Exalted is He:
Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler إنما الصدقات للفقراء والمساكين والعاملين عليها والمؤلفة قلوبهم وفي الرقاب والغارمين وفي سبيل الله وابن السبيل
[At-Tawbah 9:60]
These are eight categories who are the people of zakah; it is not permissible to distribute it to anyone other than them, and it is obligatory to distribute it to them, due to His saying:
an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise. فريضة من الله والله عليم حكيم
[At-Tawbah 9:60]
