I work as a doctor, and pharmaceutical companies give us some gifts as advertising for the medicines. Are these gifts permissible for us, or do they belong to the hospital? Also, we receive free medicines as medical samples; do they belong to the hospital, or can we dispose of them?

The questioner : I work as a doctor, and pharmaceutical companies give us some gifts as advertising for the medicines. Are these gifts permissible for us, or do they belong to the hospital? Also, we receive free medicines as medical samples; do they belong to the hospital, or can we dispose of them?

The Shaykh : It is not permissible for a worker in a public interest for Muslims to accept a gift if it is given to him. This is because
Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he sent a man named Abdullah ibn al-Lutbiyah to collect the alms and he returned, said: "This is for you, and this was given to me as a gift." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people and condemned this, saying: "What is the matter with a man whom we appoint to a job, and he says, 'This is for you, and this was given to me as a gift'? Why does he not sit in his father's and mother's house and see if he is given a gift or not?"
.
Accordingly, it is not permissible for a person who is in one of the jobs of the Muslims to accept a gift; rather, he must return it. If he happens to accept it, it is obligatory for him to place it in the interest of this work and not take ownership of it, because it is forbidden for him. Yes.
