The Shaykh : He says:
"Were it not that the Divine One rescued him with His mercy *** he would have turned back on his heels in retreat"
This means that were it not that Allah rescued him with His mercy, he would have, when he was unable to derive benefit, turned back and abandoned it, just as some people, when they are unable to grasp something the first time, turn back on their heels and leave it.
"But he stood humbly, abasing himself *** feeling bankrupt of any price"
This means that he did not turn back, but rather he stood, hoping that perhaps Allah would open the door for him.
"Then a host came to him and removed his shackles *** and at that moment his reach extended"
It is known that when the shackles are removed, one is able to take a wide step and extend his reach. He says:
"And by Allah, were it not that his shackles were removed *** and the bond of Satan was taken off him"
