He says: When I pray and recite the Qur'an, I close my eyes, and when I open them, I do not attain the necessary humility. Is there anything wrong with that?

The questioner : When I pray and recite the Qur'an, I close my eyes, and when I open them, I do not attain the necessary humility. Is there anything wrong with that?

The Shaykh : The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) disliked a man closing his eyes in prayer, except if there is something in front of him that, if he looked at it, would distract him from humility and occupy him away from the prayer. In that case, he closes his eyes out of necessity.
As for making this a constant habit and claiming that it brings one closer to humility, that is not advisable. Shaytan may make this matter attractive to him and cause him to distance himself from it, and from exposing himself to it in his prayer, in order for him to fall into this matter, namely closing his eyes. His humility when he closes his eyes may be from Shaytan, who distances himself from him so that he becomes humble in order to do this which the scholars disliked.
So my advice to him is to open his eyes and to train himself to attain humility in this state. If he seeks help from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) in this matter, and Allah knows the sincerity of his intention and the goodness of his heart, then Allah the Exalted will help him in this.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
