Types of self-sacrifice, and an example of this is yielding the first row to another.

The Shaykh : ... to the point that this crowding to get ahead in the rows, as you saw, my brother Abu Abdullah, reminds me that many of our brothers have selfishness. But is this selfishness permissible or not? That is what should be noted. They have selfishness in good deeds; they do not apply the apparent meaning, and I mean what I am saying, they do not apply the apparent meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Hashr 59:9] You see that the apparent meaning of this verse is acted upon by many people, but this apparent meaning is not what is intended by it. Because self-sacrifice is divided into two categories: self-sacrifice in worship and obedience, and self-sacrifice in worldly matters. The self-sacrifice mentioned in the verse is in worldly matters, in food and drink and the like. As for worship and obedience, the opposite of the apparent meaning of the verse applies; self-sacrifice is not prescribed in that. And this often happens in the first and second rows in prayer. You find a man in the first row looking behind him and finding, for example, a man older than him, so he moves back and lets him go ahead, not because he is among those whom the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) Sunan Abi Dawud 674Sahih (Al-Albani) refers to, but because he is older in age, his companion is his friend, so he prefers him with the benefit of the first row. This is an error. And judge accordingly: self-sacrifice in acts of obedience and worship is disliked religiously. As for the self-sacrifice mentioned in the previous verse, it is in food and drink and the like, in ordinary matters. And this is what I wanted to remind you of on that occasion. Therefore, we can say in that regard: let those who compete compete.
but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation
ويؤثرون على أنفسهم ولو كان بهم خصاصةlet those of your who are sedate and prudent be near me
ليلني منكم أولو الأحلام والنهى
