The questioner : A small question, I mean, the book *Qawa'id al-Ahkam* by Ibn 'Abd al-Salam divides bid'ah (religious innovation) into six or seven categories. Is this permissible?

The Shaykh : No, it is not permissible.

The questioner : He wrote that there is a recommended bid'ah (religious innovation) and a bid'ah ... ?

The Shaykh : Clarifying the statement in this issue regarding the classification: the classification has no basis. However, if one looks closely at some of the categories, they are among the mursal masalih (unspecified public benefits), and in that case, the matter is excluded from being a bid'ah of misguidance. For example, when they speak of obligatory bid'ah (religious innovation), they might answer you by citing the compilation of the Qur'an as an example. The compilation of the Qur'an is obligatory (fard) because if it had not been compiled, it would have been lost. And Allah said:
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. إنا نحن نزلنا الذكر وإنا له لحافظون
[Al-Hijr 15:9]
And He pointed to what this verse contains:
This is the Book about which there is no doubt الم ذلك الكتاب لا ريب فيه
[Al-Baqarah 2:2]
There is a Book there. So if it had not been compiled, there would be no Book. This is what is called bid'ah (religious innovation): a newly occurring matter that contradicts what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was upon, intended to increase drawing near to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). This is an obligatory matter. And this is a very long discussion. Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdika, ashdhu alla ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk.
