What is the meaning of *hadath* in the hadith: "Whoever introduces a *hadath* in it, or shelters one who has introduced a *hadath*"?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good. He says: It is authentic in the hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the virtue of Madinah:
he who made any innovation in it من أحدث فيها حدثا
Sahih Muslim 1371a
He asks, what is the *hadath*?

The Shaykh : It appears, and Allah knows best, that *hadath* is anything that brings about a tangible or intangible trial. For example, if the innovators introduce and spread religious innovation in Madinah, they deserve what the Messenger (may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him) invoked against them. Likewise, whoever introduces a *hadath* through killing, looting, theft, or the like, he deserves what the Prophet (may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him and his family) invoked against him.
As for mere minor or major sins that do not amount to a *hadath* or a trial, they do not, and Allah knows best, fall under this hadith.
