If a person has a debt to another person and gives him an item or a need whose price equals this debt that is upon him, is this action permissible?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : If a person has a debt to someone and gives him a need whose price equals this debt that he has, is this action permissible?

The Shaykh : It is not permissible for the creditor, if the debtor gives him a gift, to accept it from him unless he intends to deduct it from his debt, or intends to reward him with its equivalent or something better. An example of this is if a person has a hundred riyals owed to him by another, and the debtor gives him a gift worth fifty riyals, then it is not permissible for him to accept it unless he intends to deduct it from his debt, leaving the debtor with only fifty riyals, or if he intends to reward him for it by giving him something worth fifty riyals or more. As for taking this gift that is worth half his debt and then demanding his full debt, that is not permissible.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
