The questioner : He says:The questioner : I said once, at one time, to deter myself: “I swear by triple divorce that I will not return to smoking, and if I do return, my wife is divorced by triple divorce,” and I uttered it, but my intention was not to divorce my wife, but rather to deter myself from this evil?
The Shaykh : We say to the brother questioner: We ask Allah the Exalted to help you to leave smoking. The fact that you made this severe, heavy oath upon yourself indicates that your intention is sincere. So seek help from Allah Mighty and Majestic, and resolve with a sincere intention to leave it, and Allah Mighty and Majestic will help you to do so. If it happens that you said this statement, “If I return to smoking, my wife is divorced,” and then you returned to it, then there is nothing upon you except the expiation for an oath, because its ruling is the ruling of an oath. However, this does not mean that we permit you to smoke. What we see is that smoking is forbidden because of the harm it contains for the body, the waste of money, the extravagance in spending, and the dislike of some acts of worship that prevent a person from smoking, such as fasting, for example, and the dislike of gatherings of good in which one cannot smoke. So it is a harmful cause, and the one who advises himself is the one who avoids it. If he is afflicted with it, let him try to get rid of it. If Allah knows sincerity of intention from him, then Allah will help him to leave it. The means to that is to reduce it. If it is your habit to smoke ten, smoke nine for a few days, then eight, then seven, until you get rid of it. And strive not to sit with those who smoke, because if a person sits with those who smoke, he cannot control himself but rather follows the others. And we ask Allah for everyone protection from what angers Him. Yes.
