Explaining that the successful among people are those who turn their habits into acts of worship, and the heedless are those who turn their acts of worship into habits.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Let it be known that the successful, attentive, and prudent one is the one who turns his habits into acts of worship, while the heedless, negligent, and transgressing one is the one whose acts of worship turn into habits. Indeed, many people get up from their beds, perform wudu, pray, and return to their homes. When the next time comes, they get up, perform wudu, and pray, and so on. But they do it out of habit because they grew up in an environment where this is the norm, so they are heedless of sincerity to Allah in their worship and heedless of obeying the command of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in what He has commanded. All of us, when we have a state of ritual impurity, get up to perform wudu, and it is not possible to pray without wudu. But most of us have lost the obedience to Allah's command in this matter. Most of us perform wudu without feeling that we are obeying Allah's command in His saying:
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces يا أيها الذين أمنوا إذا قمتم إلى الصلاة فاغسلوا وجوهكم
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
and so on. What we should do when we get up to perform wudu is to feel that we are applying or obeying the command of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in His saying:
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces يا أيها الذين أمنوا إذا قمتم إلى الصلاة فاغسلوا وجوهكم
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
and so on, so that this act is not lost on us and becomes like an ordinary matter.
The successful one turns his habits into acts of worship. Even the habits he is accustomed to can be turned into acts of worship by which he draws near to Allah. For example, when he eats or drinks, he will mention Allah at the beginning of the meal and praise Allah at the end. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is pleased with the servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, and drinks a drink and praises Him for it. When one eats or drinks, it is possible for him to make this eating and drinking an act of worship. How is that? He feels that he is eating in obedience to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and eat and drink, but be not excessive كلوا واشربوا ولا تسرفوا
[Al-A'raf 7:31]
. He feels that while eating and drinking, he is preserving his health and protecting his body from destruction in obedience to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful. ولا تقتلوا أنفسكم إن الله كان بكم رحيماً
[An-Nisa 4:29]
. He eats and drinks while feeling that he is enjoying the blessings of the Bestower. The Bestower is generous and loves for people to enjoy His blessings and is pleased with that from them. So the successful person can turn his habits into acts of worship, while for the heedless person, acts of worship become habits. So beware, O brothers, remember in every act of worship that you are performing it in obedience to the command of Allah and following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
