Explaining the Distinctive Features of the Month of Ramadan: First: The Obligation of Fasting Ramadan.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We are in these days in the blessed month of Ramadan, this month which Allah the Exalted has distinguished with great characteristics that were not in any other month. Among its characteristics:
That Allah made it obligatory for His servants to fast it, as came in the Book of Allah. So Allah the Exalted said:
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Up to now, we have not reached the evidence; you did not mention the month of Ramadan.
decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous - كتب عليكم الصيام كما كتب على الذين من قبلكم لعلكم تتقون
[Al-Baqarah 2:183]
We want to find the evidence that this obligation is in Ramadan. Read the verses, do you have them memorized? Rest.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh :
So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month أياما معدودات فمن شهد منكم الشهر
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]

The student: ...

The Shaykh : Well done, may Allah reward you. The verses are in the Book of Allah Mighty and Majestic; a person reads them whenever he passes them in the Book of Allah.
decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous - (184) [Fasting for] a limited number of days كتب عليكم الصيام كما كتب على الذين من قبلكم لعلكم تتقون أياما معدودات فمن شهد منكم الشهر فليصمه
[Al-Baqarah 2:183-184]
Which month? Which month, people? The month of Ramadan, because the "al" here is for the mental covenant, the month of Ramadan. And the proof of this is His saying, the Exalted, in the second verse:
The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an شهر رمضان الذي أنزل فيه القرآن
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]
And Allah did not prescribe fasting for any month of the months except the month of Ramadan. And this is a distinction that is not for any other. Brother, rest, stay standing for a while, because you are turning around too much where there is no place for it. Okay, there is no month in the Sunnah in which fasting is obligatory except the month of Ramadan, and this is a great distinction for this month.
