Q: What are the days on which it is recommended for a person to fast other than the month of Ramadan, and what are the days on which fasting is not recommended? Or is it sufficient for a person to fast only the month of Ramadan? Is fasting the month of Ramadan obligatory or a recommended practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? I ask for clarification of this from the Book and the Sunnah.
A: Fasting the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, and the basis for its obligation is the Book, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus. As for the Book, it is the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:183] up to His saying: [Al-Baqarah 2:185] the verse.
And as for the Sunnah, it is the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan an-Nasa'i 5001Sahih (Darussalam) and among them was mentioned: fasting Ramadan. And from Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And the Muslims have reached scholarly consensus on the obligation of fasting the month of Ramadan, and that it is one of the pillars of Islam. As for the days on which fasting is recommended, among them are: fasting six days of Shawwal for the one who fasted Ramadan, fasting the day of 'Ashura and the day before it or after it, fasting the Day of 'Arafah for the non-pilgrim, fasting three days of every month, and if he fasts them on the white days – which are: the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth – of every month, that is better, fasting Mondays and Thursdays, fasting one day and breaking the fast one day, and fasting the month of Allah, Muharram. As for the days on which fasting is forbidden, among them are: fasting the two days of 'Id, and fasting the days of Tashriq except for the one performing tamattu' or qiran if he did not find the sacrificial animal, and volunteering to fast the day
of Friday alone; if he fasts a day before it or a day after it, there is no harm. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.

O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous -
The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days

He said: The month of Ramadan. He said: Is there anything else upon me? He said: No, except that you volunteer something.
