What is arrogance? And how does a person become arrogant?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is arrogance? And how does a person become arrogant?

The Shaykh : Arrogance was defined by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his saying:
disdaining what is true and despising people بطر الحق، وغمط الناس
Sunan Abi Dawud 4092Sahih in chain (Al-Albani)
.
The meaning of
Rejecting the truth بطر الحق
is rejecting it; that a person rejects the truth. For example, if he says something and then it is said to him: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said such and such," meaning the opposite of what this man said, but he rejects what the Messenger said and persists in his own statement, this is arrogance, and it is one of the greatest types of arrogance, because it is a rejection of the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
Likewise, if it is said to him: "Allah said such and such," which is contrary to what he is saying, and he persists in his statement, this is arrogance, and it is the greatest type of arrogance, because it is a rejection of the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). This is one of the categories of arrogance: rejecting the truth. Likewise, if a person is exerting effort in deriving a ruling from the rulings, and he is questioned about it, and it becomes clear that the truth is contrary to his statement—even if there is no explicit text contradicting him—but he persists in what he says, this is also from arrogance.
The second is:
Belittling people غمط الناس
, meaning looking down upon them and despising them, to the extent that he sees people as nothing and sees himself as above people. If this is the case, it is from arrogance. Its sign is that he turns his cheek away from people, walks on the earth with pride, and imagines that he is above the tops of the mountains and that people are in the bottom of the wells. This is from arrogance.
When the Companions said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "A man loves for his garment to be good and his sandal to be good," the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace. Pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and contempt for the people. إن الله جميل يحب الجمال، الكبر بطر الحق، وغمط الناس
Sahih Muslim 91a
. Accordingly, a person adorning himself in his clothes on his body or those he wears on his feet, which are sandals, is in no way from arrogance, unless it is accompanied by what the Prophet (may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him) indicated by his saying that he belittles people and looks down upon them. He looks down upon whoever does not wear clothing like his, and looks down upon the poor and the like of that. This is arrogance.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
