The questioner : This female questioner, O honorable Shaykh, inquires about the meaning of this hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
My Lord, Blessed is He and Most High, came to me in the best of appearances أتاني ربي في أحسن صورة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3234Hasan (Darussalam)
He said: I think he said: in a dream-
He said: O Muhammad, do you know what the highest assembly disputes over فقال: يا محمد، هل تدري فيما يختصم الملأ الأعلى
Does this hadith indicate that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw his Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He)? And does this contradict the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And it is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a partition or that He sends a messenger وَمَا كَانَ لِبَشَرٍ أن يُكَلِّمَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَّا وَحْيًا أَوْ مِنْ وَرَاءِ حِجَابٍ أَوْ يُرْسِلَ رَسُولًا
[Ash-Shuraa 42:51]
